Every facade of the existing Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kit is treated the same. Yet in this one moment, two people are having entirely different experiences with it. The redesign needed to replicate the delicacy of care that should be emulated during this process; simultaneously, it needed to be clear for the physician administering it. I proposed a design solution that came from qualitative and qualitative research.
Looking back on this work, I think about the six months I spent focusing on color palette and typeface choices as well as package dimensions and copy writing. Years later, I reflect on my work as being product-driven rather than patient-focused. I only scratched the surface with the research and the outcome proves that – when I have the opportunity to go back and spend time on this project, I would like to co-design with communities who have been impacted by sexual assault and make the design process more liberatory. I share this epiphany to prove how rapidly and intensely we grow as emotional and intellectual human beings.
